On June 26, 2024, China Petroleum invited our company’s engineers and project managers to the site at the Bohai Cangzhou station. China Petroleum Group Bohai Drilling Engineering Co., Ltd. demonstrated the process of assembling and disassembling drill pipe. The track used in this process is called a “catwalk,” and each set of automatic pipe handling equipment on the catwalk costs approximately 400,000 yuan, leading to significant cost pressure.
Due to the low cost budgets in the domestic oil market, it is challenging to bear the current equipment costs. Therefore, there is an urgent need to introduce new technologies on the existing catwalk to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Based on the site conditions, we have proposed a solution.
We plan to use a mature reciprocating winch as the power source, with the catwalk serving as the track, and add reciprocating transfer cars (both main and auxiliary) on top. This technology will enable the process of laying down and installing drill pipes on the track. The main and auxiliary cars can simultaneously accommodate three drill pipes in parallel. When the winch is activated, the main car moves forward, and the auxiliary car also advances with the movement of the drill pipes. Upon reaching the designated position, the contact switch is triggered, and the flap opens, allowing the drill pipes to roll naturally into the storage area. This approach significantly enhances operational efficiency and safety.
